Hessville, Indiana was founded in 1852 by merchants, Joseph and Elizabeth Hess, who had originally settled in Gibson Station in 1850. They established a bakery and restaurant in the area, but when the Michigan Central railway opened another route from Chicago to Gibson Station, they relocated south,  and opened a general store.
